What does a Mechanical Fitter do?

As a Mechanical Fitter you’ll be using a broad range of engineering-related skills involving the use of all types of tools, machinery and materials, working with plastics and different types of metals.
You'll be putting machinery together, machining parts, and make sure everything fits just right.

What will you learn as an apprentice?
An apprenticeship in Mechanical Fitting will teach you what is involved in the fabrication, installation and maintenance of industrial products. Under the supervision of qualified tradespeople, you will also learn how to:
- Interpret diagrams and technical drawing and plans to determine suitable material and sequence of operations
- Operate tools and large machinery, including lathes, mills and welding plant, learning to diagnose and repair machinery faults
- Work with a set of specifications to grind, mill, weld, cut and shape materials including plastics and metals
- Assemble fabricated parts into completed products
It generally takes four years to become a qualified Mechanical Fitter, but since the apprenticeship is based on competency, it can be completed earlier if you have achieved the required skills.

Where can your apprenticeship lead you?
There are many career pathways and options open to you once you complete your apprenticeship.
When undertaking a Mechanical Fitter apprenticeship you will study a Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade over four years.
You might want to gain further qualifications in your chosen field, or even undertake another trade.

Career Pathway
During your apprenticeship with MEGT you will work towards attaining the Certificate III in Engineering – Mechanical Trade, upon completion of which you will be qualified to work as a Mechanical Fitter.
There are options to upskill with further study, which will enable you to pursue a variety of more advanced occupations within the trade once you obtain the necessary qualifications for a specific role;
