Because finding work shouldn’t be a full-time job!
Looking for work shouldn’t end up feeling like a full-time job. Use these search tips to save time and get right to the roles you want to find.
-
TitleUse keywords in online job searches
Using keywords is the easiest way to narrow your search and focus only on the roles you want to see:
Field or industry: Enter the field or industry you’d like to work in, such as plumbing, electrical or air conditioning.
Job title: Try entering your desired job title – e.g. 1stYear Apprentice Plumber. Just keep in mind that not all employers will use the same title so you may need to widen your search if you don’t get a lot of results.
Company name: If you have a dream company in mind that you’d like to work for you can search directly by the company name.
Job type: Narrow down search results by putting in full-time, part-time, school-based, etc.
Location: Enter the location where you’d like to work. Ideally, this would be close to home but don’t limit your options, be willing to travel a little to secure the perfect job.
-
TitlePut yourself out there
Don’t wait around for an opportunity to come knocking on your door. While approaching potential employers can be intimidating, it is a powerful strategy as it shows initiative and enthusiasm.
Google search for local employers in your preferred industry, then give them a call or knock on their door. Just make sure you’re presented professionally and have an up to date copy of your resume with you!
-
TitleThe 'hidden' job market
This is an expression that is used to describe vacancies that aren’t advertised.
You can find jobs within the hidden job market by using your network – family, friends, colleagues, school careers advisor or teachers, TAFE teachers and social media. Let them know that you are looking for an apprenticeship or traineeship and ask them to spread the word.
