Mentoring with Mardi Fogliani

I started mentoring at MEGT around two years ago, and as someone who has always worked in industries that enrich myself and others, I was truly inspired by the unique challenges these women face. With a background of 17 years in Employment Services specialising in Disability Employment, I understood the barriers many women encounter when pursuing careers in male-dominated fields, especially trades where female representation is a mere 3%.

Watching the landscape shift as I guide women through their careers has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. The struggles are real and often heartbreaking where sadly bullying, sexual harassment, and systemic bias are still pushing many women to the sidelines. Yet, through mentorship, we can tackle these challenges together.

My approach starts with building rapport, understanding my mentee’s unique strengths, and providing tailored advice. I don’t just give answers; I help them find the confidence to navigate their environment, addressing barriers and encouraging them to embrace their skills and individuality. We customise our mentoring services to support our apprentices and trainees however they need it.

Mentoring isn’t just about overcoming obstacles; it’s about celebrating strengths. Women bring exceptional communication skills, creativity, and problem-solving abilities to the trade industry. My advice for women considering this path would be to absolutely follow your passion, seek support, and connect with other women in the trades.

Mentoring is important for all apprentices and trainees as we provide them with advice, guidance, support and encouragement to become the best version of themselves. We form a strong support system that allows our mentees to flourish and feel comfortable enough to speak what is on their minds. The journey may be challenging, but there’s a dedicated community and of course mentors, ready to uplift you.
