Hello, everyone! My name is Lachlan Carey, and I’m thrilled to share my journey with you as I celebrate being awarded Trainee of the Year. To say I’m over the moon is an understatement; this recognition has left me feeling incredibly humbled and very proud of myself.
I’m currently studying a Diploma in Early Childhood Education. I first dipped my toes into this field by completing my Certificate III last year. I spent a year on that, followed by the last fast-paced ten months for my diploma. Every day is unique and fulfilling, and I’m just grateful to be doing what I love.
When I received the news of being named Trainee of the Year, I felt a rush of emotions and could hardly believe it! Meeting the other finalists was particularly special, they all had impressive achievements in their own fields, and we got along really well. The Newcastle Awards and later the State awards in Sydney were both unforgettable experiences that I will cherish forever.
My journey into early childhood wasn’t a straightforward path. At 16, I suffered two strokes that changed my life forever. An avid football player, I had to step away from the sport I loved due to health issues, including a hole in my heart and a clot in my leg. During my recovery, I found myself coaching younger kids, and that’s where my passion for teaching began to bloom. I witnessed firsthand how football was an outlet for kids to express themselves, and it opened my eyes to how impactful my involvement could be.
Funny enough, after losing my job as an electrician during COVID, I took the plunge and entered a traineeship in early childhood education. I’ve never looked back since. I’ve had the privilege to teach children in the 3-5 age range, and I particularly love the time spent outdoors, bonding through activities like coaching under-19 teams.
I cannot express enough gratitude towards MEGT for their unwavering support. From the moment I signed on, they’ve been so proactive, constantly checking in to see how I’m doing. It was comforting to know that someone was there cheering me on through the ups and downs.
One of the greatest joys of my job is witnessing the children grow and develop. It’s like climbing a staircase, each step represents progress, no matter how small. Seeing their faces light up as they tell their families what they’ve learned truly warms my heart.
Looking ahead, my dream is to be that familiar face the kids and their parents recognise years from now, a testament to the impact I hope to make in their lives. I've already started seeing younger siblings from my first class come and say hello, and that connection means the world to me.
Receiving this award isn't just a personal achievement; it’s a reflection of the wonderful community around me. I’m excited for what the future holds and can’t wait to keep growing alongside the incredible children I have the honour of teaching!
